Welcome to St Helens District Womens Aid

What we do

Working in close cooperation with other agencies we reduce the level of domestic violence in St Helens and provide emergency accommodation for victims of domestic violence. We want to stop domestic violence continuing to spread into future generations

Situation

According to the Home Office there is a greater probability of domestic violence within families that are categorised as “Hard Pressed” than in any other group.

Historically St Helens has relied on a very small number of large employers to provide the majority of employment opportunities. This has produced low expectations of enterprise and entrepreneurship within the local population.

The level of self-employed women in St Helens is approximately 3.9% compared to 6.3% for the North West and 7.3% for the UK.

Following the industrial restructuring in the 1970’s there are continuing low levels of enterprise and high levels of worklessness within St Helens.

This has produced a high proportion of “Hard Pressed” families within St Helens which leads to high stress levels, increased levels of alcohol and drugs abuse and high levels of domestic violence.

What we provide

We operate two, 24 hour refuges, staffed by qualified professionals for women and children who have been subject to domestic violence.

We operate a 24 hour helpline providing advice and assistance to people in need of support.

We provide outreach services via our Drop-In Centre to assist anyone trying to cope with a domestic violence situation plus general support on any type of problem

We are re-starting a specialist activity for children who have been in a domestic violence environment

We operate a Therapy Centre, staffed by qualified psychologists and counsellors where we offer counselling services to both victims and perpetrators of domestic violence plus an increasing range of other counselling services

We are therefore trying to offer services which both mitigate the effects of domestic violence and which reduce the incidence of future violence
